Well, it started off, you know, a bunch of years back when I had a daughter, right. And, when she was born, for Christmas I usually draw a picture for my family. Like a personal one. And so I did, for that picture, for some reason, I decided to do like a panda guy because, actually, also like "Samwise," "Panda" is my nickname because I'm kind of a big hairy bear dude, but I'm not very fearsome.
About half of these subscribers are believed to be in China. WoW creator Blizzard has tried several different strategies to keep people playing the game.
It has introduced a version that is free to play in the early stages of the game. In addition, it let subscribers get a free version of its other hugely popular title Diablo 3, if they signed a month contract for WoW. Part of WoW's decline has been put down to growing competition from other top tier games that have launched in recent months. Mists of Pandaria is the fourth expansion for the massively multiplayer online game. In the beta, pandaren wore samurai armor but as the panda as an animal is linked to China rather than Japan, some Chinese players complained and this was soon fixed.
Due to the pandaren's popularity, their possible appearance in WoW has been hinted at multiple times by Blizzard. The pandaren were initially planned to be the new playable race for the Alliance in World of Warcraft 's first expansion, The Burning Crusade , but about halfway through development they were replaced with the draenei. By that point, the artists had already created concept art for pandaren cities and buildings, but the change happened early enough in development that not much content was cut.
The developers would not get permission to implement pandas until 5 years later. According to Kaniuga, "In reality it was probably just that they needed more time to negotiate it. Panda's [ sic ] are a national treasure in China, so it takes a lot of negotiating to work a deal to distribute characters that look like that in China. A fanmade hoax originally presented as a leaked pandaren screenshot from The Burning Crusade.
Because of this, the pandaren's replacement—the draenei—were not ready to be showcased in time for the public announcement of The Burning Crusade at BlizzCon ; only the new Horde race—the blood elves —was revealed, with no mention of what the Alliance race would be. This quickly led to a large amount of rumors and speculation among fans, with the pandaren being one of the more popular races brought up as a possibility. A "leaked" pandaren screenshot began circulating around various forums the day before BlizzCon, but on April 1 the following year it was revealed to have been a prank created by Ian McConville of the Mac Hall webcomic.
The draenei were officially unveiled as the new Alliance race at E3 , roughly 6 months after the announcement of The Burning Crusade , [17] but rumors persisted that the developers had originally planned to use pandaren instead.
Blizzard would not confirm or deny these rumors directly until BlizzCon , when Chris Metzen revealed during an interview with Direct TV that this was indeed the case. Pandaren as depicted at BlizzCon On July 28, , Blizzard issued a trademark for the name "Mists of Pandaria. Most of the time when we do anything panda-related it's going to be a comic book or a figurine or something like that.
On October 21, at BlizzCon , Blizzard officially announced World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria as the fourth expansion , and the pandaren became the first playable race available to both the Horde and the Alliance. After Chris Metzen introduced Mists of Pandaria during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon , controversy ensued, with the WoW community becoming somewhat divided over the expansion. Yes, the rabbits and monkeys were childish but MoP had a lot of content.
I think it being sandwiched between two bad expansions, one particularly bad, does it a lot of favors. When they were first announced it went over like a lead balloon. The forums were lit up for weeks with people complaining about them. I thought the whole storyline of Pandaria was clever and perfect. The whole theme of the pandaren people controlling their emotions to prevent the sha from gaining power… without really noticing that the sha are the remnants of an old god was awesome.
The mogu are the ultimate aggressors and antagonist with them enslaving and conquering all who oppose them. The hozen were a goofy race that always made me smile and sometimes chuckle. I miss Riko and hope he shows up in the story for the Horde.
Riko for Warchief! I thought the shado-pan was a cool faction, unraveling Wrathions story was interesting, finishing the karasang wilds rep to learn more about the faction war was really cool.
Timeless isle was a great zone for pvp. My favorite part was when the troll invasion occurred. This whole expansion stemmed from the pandaren. They had to think about the landmass of pandaria and where they would originate and have their origin take place. They took it a step further and also gave us a second group of pandaren from the wandering isles.
Which is kind of amazing when you think this all came from a pandaren named Chen Stormstout who rexxar had to help find ingredients for Warcraft 3. Perhaps it was a joke character. But I like to think it blossomed into a great idea that really gained its own legs and started running.
