What is the difference between a mare and a gelding
They are normally not aggressive towards humans but mostly towards other stallions. We should remember here that horses are flock animals and a stallion will naturally try to rule the herd around of horses around it. A foal is a baby horse. It can be either male or female. When we are talking specifically about a female foal we will often use the term filly and when we are specifically talking about a male foal we will use the term colt. How we are done describing the many names for horses and we will move on to explain the terms we use to describe smaller horse-like breeds.
A pony is a small horse that is lower than Ponies will typically have a thicker coat and be a bit more muscular than the normal horse. They also have shorter legs which is why they are not as tall as horses. Other than that, a pony looks a lot like a small horse. And the pony will also eat and drink the same stuff as a horse. It can even be ridden by kids and shorter people. A Jenny or a Jennet is a female Donkey. They can be any age as the term only describe that we are talking about a female donkey.
A Jack is a male Donkey. When you breed a jack and a female horse you get a mule. They are not very common and they are typically sterile, which means that they are not able to reproduce themselves.
People will often produce donkeys instead of hinnies as they are more useful and easier to work with. A Zonkey is a hybrid of a Donkey and a Zebra. They also have many other funny names and they are not very common. Probably because Zebras like to keep to themselves and so do Donkeys. These horses generally compete on the flat and the best of them will be used for breeding after their racing career. Filly — A female horse aged four years or younger is known as a filly. There are many flat races which are open only to fillies, as they would often be at a disadvantage if asked to run against colts.
Gelding — A gelding is a male horse which has been castrated. Stallion — A stallion is a male horse who is kept for breeding purposes. Stallions will usually have had a successful racing career in their younger days and it can cost extraordinary amounts to get a top stallion to breed with your broodmare. Yearling — The name yearling is applied to any foal, between January 1st and December 31st of the year after their birth. Yearlings are too young to race but are often bought and sold with future racing in mind.
Flat Racing — One of the two main varieties of horse racing, flat racing does not feature any obstacles and races can be run on turf, dirt or all weather surfaces. For most riders or owners just starting out on their own, buying a stallion could be a disastrous move, even if the idea of owning a stallion seems romantic. Some experienced riders and owners refuse to have a stallion because even the most well-behaved, well-trained ones can become temperamental and, without proper handling, dangerous.
While mares are less aggressive than stallions, they can have their difficult moments as well. During their heat cycles, mares can sometimes get "moody" or temperamental. This may be most obvious in the spring, during the natural breeding season.
Mares can cycle at any time of year, and the accompanying moodiness may also appear to a greater or lesser degree. Not all mares are difficult to handle during this time. A lot will depend on their training and basic temperament. If a once well-behaved mare becomes unusually moody, she may be suffering from cystic ovaries, or other health issues, which require the attention of a veterinarian.
Moodiness aside, many mares make great beginner horses. For a beginner rider, there is a slight bias in favor of geldings. The reason for this is that geldings tend to have fewer mood swings than mares because they have no heat cycles. Geldings gelded late in life may still retain some of the behavioral characteristics of a stallion, although they are physically unable to reproduce. These horses are not a good choice for a beginner.
A horse that was gelded early in its life will likely be the steadiest.
